• Races, Airies, and other emergency

Aparently, there are a couple amateur radio
volunteer groups, Airies, Races, and a third
one I can't remember the name. They provide
emergency comms for snow storms, weather
events, and gosh knows what else.

One friend of mine was poorly treated as a
volunteer, and isn't going to go back ever
again to this kind of thing.

Second friend has no experience with these,
    but has done the training.

One email contact says he's volunteered, but
didn't say if he was kindly treated or not.

What's the experience of the people here? Is
it good to volunteer for these groups?

There are more amateur radio emergency groups than can be counted!

The one you attempted to identify is RACES. That refers to:Radio Amateur
Civil Emergency System. Was begun during the cold war as part of the
National Civil Defense organization. Not much today.

Check your church organization for Amateur Emergency groups. The Red
Cross, Salvation Army, Southern Baptist, and many others. Also many
Search and Rescue Groups have Amateur Radio divisions.

There is the world wide marine emergency network in operation every day.
Check out ARRL web site for other suggestions.

Many states have amateur radio emergency nets. I belong to the Oregon Emergency Net that meets every evening at 6pm local time on 3980 KHz.

In the old days there were RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service)
This was the ONLY service authorized to transmit during a communications blackout/emergency)

ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) Not so authorized but often the
    same people as RACES

    And they combined under

ARPSC (Amater Radio Public Service Corps)

    If I got it right

Of course there are also many many Amateur Radio voulenteer groups that
assist with assorted Civil events and emergencies without the benefits
    of ARPSC membership.

Yes, Sometimes you get treated badly Either by an incompentent NCS or by
the "Officals".. I have had the pleasure of working with some folks
who..Were I aware of an award for "Best Event NCS" I would nominate them
    and expect them to win.

Likewise I have had the pain of working with folks on the other end of
    the scale. (Worst)

I myself was sort of a professional NCS for 25 years (Police Dispatcher)

I have run a Public Service (Event) net for a couple hours one time..i
was the Relief NCS and I guess I impressed the guy who was in charge..
But then the skills needed were ones I'd spent 25 years learning. :)

Would I volunteer to participate in another Public Service net.. You
bet,, No hesitation... But if it turned out to be one of the bad nets..
I'd not volunteer that group AGAIN. If it was a good one, Then Id work
with them again, and again, again.
