There is a setting in Opera Mail's Account Properties, in the
"Outgoing" tab, to "Automatically wrap outgoing messages". It's
enabled by default, but it was disabled because I thought it would
break up the really long URLs into two separate lines. It also causes messages in "Edit" mode to be wrapped instead of using the entire
window width, which I do not want. Linelength = -1 when the setting
is disabled and Linelength = 76 when the setting is enabled.

Adding newlines into URLs will break them. Instead of long string for
the URL, it gets truncated. Some clients can try to append multi-line
URLs back together, but don't count on it. Seems some clients will keep
the multi-line URL together if you enclose it in angle brackets.

Max recommended line length is 998 characters. Keep the URLs to their
own [long] line. If you are concerned that some readers don't have NNTP clients that can handle URLs longer than the window width (the only ones
I can think of are those that are command-line clients, not GUI
clients), include the long unbroken URL, and a short URL for it. There
are several URL shortening services. I use https://tinyurl.com/. You
end up with 2 lines for the same target:

    Long URL: <longURL>
    Short URL: <shortenedURL>

For whatever line length you specify in Opera Mail, you can't configure
its preview pane to be wider than that? That is, with 72-char line
lengths, chars for the newsgroup names, and borders, you can't get the
Opera Mail window wide enough to show 72 chars in the preview pane?
Actually, it looks like your preview pane is already greater than 72
chars wide, and they lines wrap before they hit the right-side of the
    preview pane.

I've never used Opera Mail. "Automatically wrap outgoing message"
sounds more about fitting lines (wrapping) within the window width than
about setting a fixed line length.

    Wasn't Opera Mail discontinued?

    https://forums.opera.com/topic/83523/operamail-where-to-go

That doesn't mean it stops working just because support and updates
stopped. You might want to ask in those Opera forums on how to
configure it to fix maximum line length to 72 characters, and then
address whatever wrapping, or lack thereof, in the compose or preview
    panes.

I'll try enabling the "Automatically wrap outgoing messages" setting.
I can copy the viewed message and paste it into "Edit" mode to negate the wrapping.
If the disabled setting has caused any problems for others, I wasn't aware
    of it.

I noticed that a couple of others on ACF, MikeS and wasbit, apparently do
    not wrap their outgoing messages.

My older version of Agent newsreader allows me to set line length by the
    number of characters. Very simple.

But I do mention that the URL may wrap if it's a long one. :)

    That's odd.

I use Thunderbird with (as far as I recall) its default wrap settings.
    Those are presently:
    mail.wrap_long_lines true
    mailnews.wraplength 72
    plain_text.wrap_long_lines true
    temp.openpgp.wrapHtmlBeforeSend true
    view_source.wrap_long_lines false

FWIW TB has no problem wrapping posts to fit whatever window size I use
for viewing so I prefer posts which are *not" using fixed line width,
    not least re broken URLs.

I prefer not using a fixed line length as well, and that's, in effect, what disabling the wrapping of outgoing messages does in Opera Mail.
As I previously posted, when that setting is enabled, the line length is 76.
My text editor, EditPad Lite, is set for "Wrap at Window Border" instead of a maximum line length.

IIRC, there used to be the technique of enclosing a URL in brackets, [https://like.this ] to stop it wrapping.
