NewsPlex - Usenet News Server Multiplexer
    Version 4.5 June 2009
Copyright © 1999-2009 by Adam Mirowski

NewsPlex is a Usenet news-server multiplexer. It allows any news-reader to access several Usenet news-servers simultaneously, by merging their content transparently into one single virtual news-server. NewsPlex merges the lists of news-groups proposed by different news-servers into one single list, and for each news-group, it merges the lists of articles available on different news-servers into one single list of articles. For each active news-group, NewsPlex maintains an index, and when a news-reader requests an article, NewsPlex forwards this request to the appropriate news-server.

Additionally, NewsPlex can be used to quickly explore large lists of candidate news-servers and evaluate their service value. This is called the Minimal mode.

NewsPlex runs on your own machine (or possibly on some other machine), in the background, and appears as a standard news-server to your news-reader and as a news-reader to your news-servers. It is therefore somewhat similar to a proxy or
    to a web cache.

The NewsPlex package includes a series of companion tools which can be used e.g.
for managing files retrieved from the Internet.

NewsPlex version 3.5 has been released.
NewsPlex is a news-server multiplexer and explorer. It is able to >transparently merge a collection of arbitrary individual news-servers
into one single virtual server, for use with any news-reader, even
those which do not support multiple servers. Only groups accessed by >news-readers are processed, and article bodies are not downloaded
until requested. NewsPlex supports all proxy types, as well as proxy
groups and proxy chaining. It is full-featured freeware, with no
    paying counterpart.
You can find both the Windows and the Linux versions at
    http://newsplex.webstylists.com/download
    Major *new* features:
    - efficient handling of the full Usenet group list. Up to a few
    thousand groups can be activated
    - auto-configuration at startup, ie. plug & play. It is not
necessary to provide config files or startup options initially.
NewsPlex will try to find news-servers on your local network, in
your news-reader config files (Unix only at this time) and
complete the list with a few public and/or specialized servers
    - support for HTTPS proxies. Improved proxy fail-over
    - ability to automatically run another program each time an async
download terminates, for example to extract the attachments
    - many new per-server flags, which eg. take into account the cost,
or make NewsPlex attempt to download requested articles even from
servers which did not say they had them
    - news-servers can be specified several times, if logins and ports
    are different
    - the manual now tries to list some web pages or other resources
    related to what NewsPlex does
    - a GetNNTP tool is now provided. It allows to issue basic requests
to news-servers, manually or from a batch file or a script, and
log the results to files. Supports same proxy types as NewsPlex

40tude dialog is probably the easiest solution for most users,
with gui setup and configuration but it is also antique (2005),
and most users nowadays are probably using mozilla thunderbird
or betterbird, web2usenet sites (e.g. pugleaf, newsgrouper) on
tv's, tablets, smart phones, etc., so there's probably not much
demand for such old-fashioned technologies apart from old folks
(like me) that are still sitting in front of a desktop computer

yes, i've recently tested it and "newsplex" does run in windows 11, but most legacy freeware may be obsolete even though it still does run in the current windows (25h2, 26200.7171, 2025-11-22) . . . e.g., some of these newsreaders have multi-server and filter capability (40tude dialog is most comprehensive):

most of the public nntp newsservers that i've tested within the last several years connected just fine with tor, provided each nntp newsserver profile is configured correctly in your tor proxy (some servers reject tor connections), and "newsplex" seems unnecessary but who knows, some might still be using it
