So, I'm running Mystic v1.12 a48 on a Win10-32bit VM. I think I've got most of it running well and consistant. At this point, I am interested
in doing some sort of auto-validation via sending a code to the
on-record email address and having it validated.
I see in the menu choices a "-V Validate e-mail address" command. The instructions I've gathered area little vague about its use, but from
what I gather, when selected, the board will email the user at the
address given at login and they respond with the code given. Sounds simple enough.
- Now, how would I go about setting up the BBS software to use an email address?
- Do I need to run/host an email server or can I run it through gmail/proton?
- What would be the procedure to do that?
- Where does the code get entered back into on the board?
- Is there a MPL or door that handles this better than the internal routines?
So, how are y'all handling this on Mystic? My last attempt at this was some 32 years ago and I had a door that dialed back the user and they
had to answer it and type in their login info. It worked back then, but was cumbersome for some less technically inclined users.

This is an interesting question. I am slowly going through setting up my BBS, but this is on my todo list ... Unless you figure it out before me, once I am on this task I will definitely let you know.
1. Mystic Config --> Editors --> Menu Editor
2. Default Theme --> New Info
3. Edit "ENTER"
4. Tab down to actions list and insert an action
5. Make this action the top one. Set the action to:
Command: -V
Data: 20
Access: s10
Grid Event: Selected
Under Activation List I just have the -V (Validate Email Address).
But when I hit enter on the registration screren, it just keeps on
showing it to me again and again, redrawing the same screen ...
I then went into ENTER, then action list and added the -V (as my original message).
Under that, you should still have a (GO) to main menu
Sounds like that might not be there now?

just verify people by hand.. if the email looks good enough, or even if
it doesn't, who cares? they'll call a couple times and either complain
tbh i would recommend against this..
i have an entry box for an email address if they want to put one in and
it just says something like "i don't email or use this address for anything, but if you forget your password and cry, and my only option is to send you a new password via sysop@sucks.com well.. too bad" ;)

Is there a way to test if my SMTP relay/sending works out of Mystic
first? I entered info but not sure if messages can be relayed....
nails. *But* I wonder where the legal side of things comes with BBSes in the land of the rest of the Internet?
I know, we're not exactly the same as "the Internet" and are probably
more or less forgotten - but I wonder what legal ramifications there are
Could, but if they go to the effort of verifying, then it saves me and gets them into more of the BBS. Can always have another few levels that get access to specific things later once they hang around.
