• Where to tune in during an emergency?

I'm a new ham, still /AG and waiting to drop it.

I was thinking about emergency situations today. I know the local 2m and
70cm repeaters for ARES and RACES use, the backup simplex frequencies, and
the local public service VHF frequencies.

But where do I tune in on HF during a local or national emergency? What happened during 9/11 on HF? Should I keep a list of these frequencies handy with the others?

    Too much cold medicine.

Correction: I'm a new General. This is my fifth year as a ham.

Check with your local club. There are a number of regional nets on HF
such as the East Coast Amateur Radio Service (East CARS), South CARS,
etc. There are state-NTS Traffic nets. And you can do a search on
the internet for your state and ARES to find other nets.

when I was with the red cross in NYC after 9/11 we used local
repeaters for comms. since the repeaters on the WTC were no longer
there, we used the one on the chrysler building, 147.000.

depending on how widespread the emergency is, local repeaters will be
used first, then HF. the FCC will sometimes allocate ham frequencies
for emergency comms and these will be announced by the ARRL in its
news bulletins published on the 'net. you can go to the ARRL website
and subscribe to get these announcements.

you can also tune to local emergency services...i was also with the
coast guard in NYC and we had a number of operations going on the
maritime VHF frequencies, mostly 157.05...but much of this was
    encrypted.
