I recently upgraded from my Technician license to Amateur Extra and am
setting up two stations.
The first has a Yaesu 757 GX 100W feeding a Carolina Windom 80 Special
and the second, a Kenwood TS-180S feeding into a Carolina Windom 160.
The SWR can be pretty high on each but can be tuned down using a
Denton Junior manual tuner that I bought used at Dayton.
I'm going to buy two new or used antenna tuners. Two questions:
In my situation, why shouldn't I buy automatic tuners?
Which automatic or manual tuners would you recommend?
Thanks for your advice.

I have an AT-11MP Autotunner by LDG Electronics and load up my 80 mtr dipole for any band I desire. The auto feature sure makes changing frequency and bands easy. I've had a few manual tuners in the past and they took the joy out when changing frequency or bands. I've had it a
few years.

My LDG-1000 works great.

Wow. This is an old posting of mine from last summer. Here is what I've learned since then.
I now own the following tuners: the Dentron Jr. Monitor which I
mentioned in my original posting; an SGC SG-239 Smartuner which I bought
for a hundred bucks at the Peotone hamfest and a Palstar AT1KP which my
XYL gave me for my birthday.
All three work well. The Dentron is small and portable. For $30, hamfest negotiated price, it can't be beat. The Palstar is built like a tank and
tunes my Windom 160 very sharply even on 160. This is both good and bad because it needs to be retuned when changing frequencies even within the
same band. Still I'm proud to have it and use it all the time.
The SGC came as a naked board which needed an external wall-wort to
power up. It also works fine and quickly retunes. It does not bring the
swr as close to 1:1 as the Palstar does. If that matters a whole lot.
Knowing what I now know; I'd go with the autotuner; at least with the
SGC SG-239.
