• Tone & Speed Question

I am planning to take the 5 wpm code test. I would like to set my MFJ
MENU DRIVEN KEYER MODEL MFJ 492, to the same tone I would expect to hear
at the day of the test.

I know how to set tones on the machine but I do not know where to set it
for the test. How can I do that?

And how do I figure out what sounds like 5 wpm on the keyer?

Is their a keyer out their with some kind of screen that give this type
    of information?

I am using the Bencher key.

    Thank you,

    73 SR!

Use a program like MorseCat (look for it with Google)on your computer
and select the 5 wpm speed. The pitch of the tone is not that important, select one you like the most. There is no official tone, so I can't help
    you with that.

    SR.

Apparently, the standard is 750 Hz but can be set anywhere between 700 and
    1000 Hz: http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2001/06/19/3/
    and/or...
    Anywhere between 400 and 1000 Hz: http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/vemanual/VEman-ch7.pdf#search=%22site%3Aarrl.org%20morse%20test%20frequency%22
    (see page 3).

The last Morse test I took was administered by the FCC and the oscillator produced a sinewave tone. I don't know if your VE will be using that type of oscillator or a squarewave type. If your speed capability is marginal, that could be a factor. For detailed information, I recommend you contact the Volunteer Examiner from whom you intend to take the test.

5 wpm is precisely that, assuming an average of 5 characters/word. This can
be by way of either sending with a consistent speed for the characters and spaces or by sending the characters at a higher rate of speed, with very
long spaces between characters and words. Either way, the WPM speed is the same.
