you do need seperate LSB abd USB in the SSB mode.
    Otherwise they will mix.

    I have a radio shack DX-394 which I bought new for $170

I purchased a GRUNDIG Yacht Boy for around $75 bucks (Ebay). It is a >digital tuning portable radio, that covers all frequencies from 530 Khz to >29 Mhz. IT has both an AM and SSB mode. The SSB mode can be used to hear >the Beat Frequencies needed for listening to CW signals. It is quite small >(9x6x2) and comes wth a External Antenna reel. Also with a WHIP antenna.
    It also handles FM signals.
You may need something that has better filters, for busy pile-up work.
This has a single filter switch that is Narrow and Wide.
