• What is the likelihood of actually using morse code in 2014?

After reading the stories of "Morse Code: the essential language" and
that "for boys" book that lists exciting activities for young boys, it
got me thinking - what is the likelihood of finding someone else who
    will understand morse code?

I know that the military communications no longer use morse code. Is it
even an elective skill for Police, Firefighters, Pilots, Forrest
Rangers - anyone in the public service to learn?

Not required but still common in the Amateur bands. Interesting side
note is that it seems that now that it is not required a lot of us are interested in learning it after we got a license. The radio's are
much simpler for both transmit and receive so it is a fun place to
play with low power. That makes it applicable for emergency and very
portable use. If one has the power and the equipment there are some
better ways but that is a big IF. It will be interesting to see if
the picture changes in 20 years as the folks who had to learn it die
off and digital equipment continues to shrink.
