Does anybody know of a book for "Dummies" to hook up and use the old packet systems? Or any other good primer book for packet that can be purchased?

Not a book but I've had a good experience with Bux. http://www.packetradio.com/PKTprimer.htm

Their Rascal works great for me and the CD has quite a lot of information
    and software:

It's probably most important to find another ham who also wants to play
with packet (or who is already).

There's also a set of good foundation articles at: http://www.choisser.com/packet/

They don't tell you how to hook it all up, but do explain what the
various system commands/params are and help you set them to the right
    values.
