• APRS/IGATEUIView/ Sending Messages

    All,

I managed to set up an IGATE using UIView-32. I have been able to
successfully gate RF to Internet (I am not doing any Internet to RF or
    RF digipeating, only listening).

How do I send a message in UIView to another IGATE? Better yet, is it
possible to send a message to someone else (say a mobile user) through
an igate/digi combination? I have played around with the "Message"
function in UIView but have not managed to get any messages ack'd, and
I don't see them showing up on findu.com.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

A friendly welcome to the world of APRS. I run a (small) digi in Ireland, EI7BFB-3. You can read more about it at www.ei8fdb.org/aprs/

Do you mean how to send a message from the current IGate to another IGate?

Maybe I am not following, but why would you want to do that? Do you mean passing a message thru your Igate to another Digi?

If you are running an IGate the purpose of it is:

"to selectivly allow packets to cross between
the APRS-IS and the local RF network."

I think what you need is to run a digi. http://info.aprs.net/index.php?title=Digipeater

You need to have a digi on one end, and a digi on the other end
to send a message across the network.

You can of course, send a message from one station to another station
    while using the same digi.

Yo umight be able to clarify what you mean.

Also, take a look at this http://info.aprs.net/ it gives lots of information.

Regarding paths, this animation is a excellent way to understand the current WIDEn-N paradigm:

I didn't answer your question, but I hope that helps. :)

Thanks for the response. To clarify, here is what I would like to do:

As I said, I am running an IGate with UIView32. UIView32 also has the
ability to send and receive personal messages. Say, for example, I
bring up findu.com and see a mobile station 100 or so miles away. I
also see another IGate set up to gate Internet to RF close to the
mobile station. Is it possible for me to send this person a message?
I was hoping there would be a way for me to route a message to the
IGate (via the Internet), then the IGate would gate the message to
RF. Then, when the person replies, it would be gated RF to Internet,
    and back to me.

Also, here is a less complex scenario. I have noticed many other
IGate operators often send and receive their own personal messages.
Can I send and receive messages to and from them? This would be non-
RF communications (all via the Internet).

In general, I'm wondering how much I can do with my current setup (a
receive only RF to Internet IGate).

    Thanks,
    Dan

There's always some moron who wants to take an amateur radio communication
and run it over the internet.

Most of these people have no business holding an amateur radio license. The hobby would be immeasurably better off without them.
