My old MS-DOS laptop died, and the latest Macintosh has no RS-232 port.
    I can't use the old PK-232 until I can come up with a USB-to-RS-232

There are cheaper versions available, but this one works fine with
packet. I have three of them.

    Nick-

Thanks for the suggestion. That isn't terribly expensive. According to plugable's website, it is compatible with recent Macintosh operating
systems and it comes with Linux drivers.

Really the revolution will come in getting data rates beyond 9600bps.
That is the challenge I see. I expect to see some convergence in some
new technologies ... I think D-Star is interesting, but it does not
need to use the AMBE codec, it could use a G.729 or G.711 codec or
even better, the free and open source speex and CELT ... http://www.celt-codec.org/comparison
Also D-Star has data rates of only 4800bps ... however D-Star is
    interesting ...

    No. I don't think they're expensive either.
I've used them with Linux and all Windows from 98se through to W7.
The packaging with mine mentioned Mac.

I'm holding out till a truly open source version of D-star comes
along. It's the only way we will get an affordable option for
    digital comms.

I agree with your open source suggestions, though, as far as I know
D-star still has an edge on performance over the open source stuff.

I wish Icom or possibly somebody like TAPR would buy the rights to
AMBE and make it open source. I'd happily contribute to such an effort.

My last Icom radio was such a piece of junk that I vowed never to
send money their way again.. And nobody else seems to be hopping
on the D-star band wagon. (Kenwood had a rebadged Icom that I
understand was available in Japan at one point..)

I'd rather wait for something open source to come along than pay
the premium prices they want for D-star.

    I am here!

I am an IT engineer, retired USAF Cryptographic Systems Tech. and
volunteer at the Seminole County Florida "Friends of the Library"
    bookstore.

Bright House Networks donates hundreds of HP computers
that I refurbish, install Linux Mint on, and they sell for $75 each,
plus tax. All proceeds go to the 5 library branches.

They are, this year, HP d530 Convertible Mint Towers, P4 2.8GHz CPU
with capability up to 4 GB DDR memory. 512Mb DDR is provided, and any
    more is simply wasted.

If you look around at any refurbisher stores near colleges, possibly in
your town, on eBay, or Craigslist, you should find these systems at
equally low prices. Be aware shipping by USPS costs about $28 or so!

That system has one each onboard serial and parallel port, plus 6 USB
ports, 1 ethernet port, and Intel video (i915), ps2 keyboard and mouse
ports. Off board, a second serial port can be added to the board
connector. There is onboard sound, front and rear panels. AGP video
    slot is 4x/8x.

I have run ShackBox Air DVD on them at Hamcation 2011, in Orlando,
Florida. Had to install a DVD ROM, as they come stock with a 48X CD ROM.

Everything "windoze" runs just fine in the WINE "compatibility layer" in Linux!

I am lurking here because I have been doing electronics, scratch
building radios and circuits, and doing depot level maintenance
since 1964, and finally have my HAM License. I hope to upgrade soon,
and want to experience Packet radio (on my Yaesu FT101, fully modded)
    before packet dies out!

Plus, we need to influence youngsters to achieve their licenses and
advance their knowledge of how things work!

    Best to all,
