I want to get started in packet radio but I dont know where to begin. I

I have Icom V8000 radios too. Work great for packet as well as voice mode.
You have couple of choices:
1. Conventional tnc (terminal node controller) and software - I'm using an older AEA PK-232 MBX tnc that I bought at a hamfest for $20 a couple of
months ago. Also tnc's made by Kantronics, MFJ and others will work. You'll have to buy or build a cable that goes between your V8000 and whichever tnc you choose.
2. Soundcard/software and interface
