One of the things I would like to experiment with is data
communications. I am confused about what I need to do that. From what
I have read so far it seems there are several different methods of
sending data over the radio. I guess RTTY was one of the first. Can
someone tell me or send me a link that tells about all the different
methods of sending data and what the advantages and disadvantages of
    each are?

I keep reading about TNC. If a radio says it has built in TNC or "A 6
pin mini DIN connector for 1200/9600 bps packet", does that mean that I
can just plug the radio into a computer device that sends serial data
and transmit it? Or is there more to it than that? I already know all
about sending data via serial ports between computers and other devices through wires. I can't find it now but I think I saw some radio that
said it had a data port but didn't have the TNC built in. What exactly
    does that mean?

The TUTORIAL section at USPacket has good information for getting started in amateur radio data communications.

well a tnc is a hardware devise to connect a program to the radio for
xmission but you can do this as good with a virtual or software tnc such as AGWPE packet engine if the program u are using is compatable with AGWPE
such as UI-view, hamscope, and many others. Also mixw has the ability to do
this by creating virtual commports or what is called loopback.AGWPE is freeware.
