• Soundmodem over speaker wire?

    From chad@chad@chadphillips.org to alt.ham-radio.packet on Mon Oct 31 04:43:06 2005
    From Newsgroup: alt.ham-radio.packet

I am interested in playing around with soundmodem. (I am not a ham
person, I was thinking about using walkie talkies.) But first I just
want to play around with soundmodem and just learn how the networking
    works.

Would it be possible to connect the soundcards of two PCs with standard
speaker wire, and then use soundmodem to communicate between them?
Would that be a good way to understand soundmodem and packet radio
networking without adding the extra problems of dealing with the
radio? Like I said, right now I just want to learn how it basically
    works.

    thanks
    chad

    Hi Chad...

Yes that should work. You should however note that direct connection
without some form of attenuator in the way might give you a distorted
input signal. ie setup some kind of resistor pad or divider between the
    spkr out and line in.

Also keep in mind that some (not all) sound cards use the chassis or
power ground as one side of the input or output. Depending on how this
is setup your output signal may see a short to ground at the input if
you "cross" the wires. ie make sure inner conducter goes to inner
    conductor and "shield" to "shield".

You may also have to follow ground loop avoidence techniques like
transformer coupling. You'll know if you have a issue if you listen to
the audio on each of received soundcards channels for any power line
    like buzz.

    Cheers Bob VK2YQA.

I hate to sound like a total newbie, but by "resistor pad" do you mean
just putting a resistor inline between the two sound cards? Would I
need a resistor on both the inner and shield lines? Any idea what size resistor to use, or would I just need to experiment until I found the
    right size?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Chad

"Pad" normally infers an source and load impedance match as well as an
amount of attenuation. Then again no soundcard I have come across
complains about no or high impedance speaker connection so a fixed value
in line might do. I'd try 1K or use a 1K pot across the spkr out and the
wiper connected to line in. Set the pot to the lowest output value
first then increase it till the right input level is met.

Inner conductor only if you are using a fixed value. Obviously if you
used a pot the bottom end would be at shield ground.

It is also a good idea to set your line input and spkr output to half
scale as this is the most likely place where the least distortion will
    occur.

    Cheers Bob

The 500 ohm sounds like a good start. I would try something like this:
(best viewed with a fixed-width font)

    ---------------z
    z<--------------
    Line z
    out z Line in
    z
    ===============z===============

    ^
    500 ohm pot |

Then you can tweak the pot for best results. If you can't get enough
volume with the pot all the way up, then maybe a larger value (maybe 5k)
would be in order. (If your sound card has both a mike and line input,
    try both.)
