    Any external battery will work. You could use two 6v lantern batteries connected in series, if you wanted to.

    My preference, and one which matches your rechargeable requirement, is
    one of those lunch-box type 12v batteries, the ones that are supposed to
    let you put power back to your car battery or run 12v stuff on the go.
    I picked one up a few years back for about $25 at a ham convention,
    going price new is around $40. HRO had them at one time, not sure if
    they still do. You might even find one at Wal-Mart. If you want an
    example, drop me an email and I'll send you a picture of the one I have.
