Can't you just get up during the night to listen? It is a rather rare opportunity, after all. Get everything set up ahead of time so you don't go waking the wife and kiddies with your crashing around in the dark!

do what i am going to do
leave the scanner squelched upon loud volume or
these 2.4GHz retransmitters for tv are quite good also.
or if your not near a scanner connected to an outside aerial....
just use a small tv in the bedroom and retransmit just the scanner audio via the rca phono socket.

If you receive the "repeated" signal, that is no big deal. People have been listening to the ISS for years on two meters.

Only a relatively few people have picked up the signals coming from the
    Space Suit.

yes but connected to what kind of aerial?

Probably the little rubber ducky it came with.

But, yes, with 11 elements and good front end sensitivity (not a
scanner), the suit signal is still barely out of the noise. Then,
again, EME signals are usually much weaker than the suit signal, and I
believe Sam Harris, W1FZJ, was doing EME around 40 years ago - with
tubes. It's not like it takes $10 million worth of equipment to do
this - 2 broom handles, some 1X2 lumber, 2 U-bolts, some coax and some copperweld wire (or wire hangers) shouldn't cost more than US$10 - but
a 5 or 6 element quad has a lot of gain and it's easy to swing around
    by hand.

If it is putting out 1/2 watt (+27 dBm) uniformly in all directions (0 dBi transmit antenna)
and is 400 miles away, and your little rubber duck is about a 0 dBi antenna (probably close),
your receiver will receive it at -105 dBm. That should be quite easy to receive.

Most likely the antenna on the suit is *not* putting the signal out in all directions.
You may also want to hear it for more than the minute or so it is going directly over you.

Oh, a "normal person" can easily build better antennas and hook them up.

oh well you'll pick up sweet FA on that. Ya gotta have the metal in the sky barky, loadsa metal going up and up....
then you'll hear things. I've got a hand held as well but it doubles as a powerful little base station when it sits on my desktop

Less than -3dbd? I doubt that. It's probably closer to -6dbi. And
that's only if it's being held normal to the suit.

Most likely the antenna on the suit is *not* putting the signal out in all directions.

From the tumble I've seen, it's definitely directional to some degree.

Beer is one of the basic food groups, so it fits where you eat -
    during Radio, I guess.

Sex ... er, Work? Sleep? Or, considering that Radio is
entertainment, ... [this is a family usenet].

Football doesn't fit into my life, so you'll have to do that one
